On December 3-4, 2024, Bangkok will host the 2nd MUFPP Asia Pacific Regional Forum, under the theme Nourishing Growing Cities: Enhancing School Meals and Supporting Local Communities, promoted by the MUFPP and the Cities Feeding The Future Initiative, and AICS – Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
Over the last years a strong interest in urban food systems has been observed in the Asia Pacific region. This trend has been confirmed by the growing participation of Asian cities in the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP), a global commitment of mayors that consider food as an entry point for the sustainable development of their cities. To date, the Milan Pact has been signed by 42 cities from the Asia Pacific. In this regard, the MUFPP has been actively working in the region, developing a multitude of activities thanks to the support of strategic partners such as the European Commission (through ICP and IURC programmes), the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the Parahyangan Catholic University along with the leadership of the MUFPP Steering Committee cities of Bandung and Seoul. A strong support was also brought by the newly established partnership with ASEAN.
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) joined the Milan Pact in August 2021. A fruitful collaboration has been carried out thanks to the European funded project IURC, which saw Bangkok and Milan actively exchanging for over one year and half. The key outcome of this collaboration saw the City of Milan supporting Bangkok Metropolitan Administration in drafting its first food strategy. The crowning moment of this process was celebrated in Bangkok last November with the official launch of Bangkok Food Strategy 2023-2027.
Following this remarkable achievement, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, the Governor of Bangkok, decided to convene the 2nd MUFPP Asia Pacific Regional Forum during 3-4 December 2024. The Forum titled “Nourishing growing cities: enhancing school meals and supporting local communities” aims at representing an opportunity to showcase innovative and transformative examples coming from emerging cities in the region.
The Forum will cover the most recurring and relevant matters and challenges that growing cities are nowadays facing. Moving from the outstanding initiatives carried out by BMA, the Forum will b a chance to showcase best practices from diverse perspectives in the region.
