The city of Milan hosted the MUFPP Global Forum on 13-17 October 2025 with the theme “Building on a decade of joint success. Envisioning the future of urban food systems”. The event, for the second time held in Milan, was a unique opportunity for cities, political representatives, international organizations, actors and stakeholders to celebrate its first decade of activity and, for the occasion, return to Milan – the city where it all began during Milan EXPO in 2015.
The Forum counted the participation of over 500 attendees, bringing together delegates from over 130 cities along with international and civil society organizations, partners agencies and academia, committed to five days of dialogue, collaboration, and field visits across the city to continue developing and pursuing urban food policies.
The Global Forum included various and comprehensive sessions focusing on the role of food as a strategic driver for sustainable development. The first Plenary Session opened the Global Forum with politicians from the MUFPP network discussing their local priorities, best practices, and insights drawn from their diverse experiences, on the stage in the Aula Magna of the University of Milan. They shared how cities, each with their own governance structures, are leading the transition towards more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems. The Governor of Bangkok, the Mayors of Bethlehem, and Quelimane and the Vice Mayor of Paris took part in the discussion, along with Milan’s Vice Mayor Anna Scavuzzo.
The event gathered major actors and stakeholders in the international arena, such as C40, EAT Foundation, Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, Rikolto, Natural Resources Defence Council, RUAF, UNEP, World Bank, World Farmers Market Coalition and others. Furthermore, the Forum was enriched thanks to the involvement of key speakers: Carlo Petrini (Founder of Slow Food), Jane Battersby (Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town), Stefano Gatti (Director General for Development Cooperation and Special Envoy for Food Security, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation) and Nosipho Nausca-Jean Jezile (Chair of the FAO Committee on World Food Security).
