The UNFSS Pre-Summit was held from the 26th to the 28th of July at FAO Headquarters in Rome, bringing together governments, delegates, representatives of youth, civil society and private sector from all around the world. The purpose of the three-day event, opened by UN Secretary-General Guterres was to lay the groundwork for the Food System Summit to be held in New York in September. The Food System Summit will aim to discuss and identify concrete actions for the transformation of the food system at global level.
The MUFPP Secretariat has been in charge of organizing the main session dedicated to the key role of cities towards the food system transformation. The plenary session with the title City and Local Food Systems saw the intervention of a variety of speakers representing different constituencies, including Mayor Sala as Chair of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. Moving from the example of the MUFPP and the more than 200 cities that share the same commitment, Mayor Sala stressed how crucial it is to build an alliance between local and national governments to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda through the transformation of the food system from production to consumption as well as the key role of cities in the development of more sustainable and inclusive food systems.
