In October 2024, Milan hosted a week dedicated to connecting with the European cities active on food policy development.
On 21-22 October, the two-day meeting of the Urban Agenda Food Thematic Partnership on Food took place, in order start shaping partnership Action Plan.
Experts and stakeholders from different sector discussed food policy, funding, procurement, education, and governance, emphasizing integrated urban-rural strategies. Thematic groups proposed an EU food policy framework, national food strategies, funding mechanisms, and education reforms to promote sustainable food systems. Milan’s systemic approach to food policies served as a central case study, inspiring collaboration across sectors.

On 23-24 October, Milan also hosted the 3rd EU City Labs dedicated to Land Strategies to feed the city, and in articular to the topic ofstrengthening local food systems through collaboration and land use. The event gathered urban planners, policymakers, and food system stakeholders to explore ways cities can integrate food sustainability into their strategies. Discussions centered on using public procurement to support local producers and reducing food waste, while keeping a lively connection between the city and the peri-urban areas.
The lab showcased Milan’s experience on the topic, and also how far the commitment of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact has come since 2015, encouraging cities globally to adopt urban food policies and work for more systemic approaches to food systems. Participants to the event emphasized the importance of systemic thinking, ensuring all aspects of urban food systems—production, distribution, and consumption—are aligned with sustainability goals.
The event also highlighted Milan’s focus on community engagement and innovative urban planning. Examples included educational programs promoting healthy eating and initiatives connecting local farmers with urban markets, further demonstrating the city’s commitment to resilient and inclusive food networks.
