Wholesale markets: public spaces for interconnected food policies

Wholesale markets are essential public infrastructure for urban food policies. They efficiently distribute fresh produce, connecting farmers with retailers and consumers, while also supporting regional economies and potentially reducing environmental impact. Furthermore, they play a pivotal role in ensuring food safety and quality standards are met.

This report aims at illustrating how wholesale markets can represent a key element for urban food system transformation and how they are intertwined with other food policy areas as demonstrated by the different MUFPP recommended actions addressed.

This report has been produced thanks to the support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and to the contributions coming from the Milan Pact Awards and the World Union of Wholesale Markets.
