Cities1 face a huge challenge of ensuring that nutritious, safe and sustainable food is available to all residents, and that it is affordable and desirable. Today, this challenge is more critical than ever before because of the demographic shift from rural to urban areas. Currently, more than 50% of the world’s population lives in urban areas; and this figure is projected to increase further to almost 70% by 2050 (UNDESA, 2018), with around 90% of future urban population growth expected to take place in Africa and Asia.
