AfriFOODlinks Podcast series “Future Plates” explores the future of food in Africa’s rapidly growing cities, asking a simple but urgent question: as Africa urbanises, what will we be eating?
Across four episodes, the series explores the connections between food and cities, looking beyond what’s on our plates to uncover the role of cities in shaping the way food reaches us, and how food is intertwined with people, places and cultures within complex local urban food systems.
The series unpacks why good nutrition matters in the first 1,000 days of life, the value of local food traditions and knowledge passed between generations and why informal markets are important places of both trade and nourishment for millions across the continent. It also looks at city governance mechanisms to understand how policy, planning, infrastructure and public services can help build healthier and more equitable food systems.
At a time when Africa is experiencing the fastest urban growth in the world, the choices being made today will shape cities and food systems for generations to come. Future Plates brings together lived experiences and diverse voices of experts, practitioners, food systems actors, city officials, youth, academics and civil society to examine the challenges, opportunities and choices that will determine what Africa’s urban food future looks like..
Future Plates is produced by ARC for the AfriFOODlinks project, led by ICLEI AFRICA and MUFPP.
