Bilbao is the capital city of the province of Biscay, and the biggest city in the Basque Country. It was founded in the 14th century and today has a population or around 350.000 (up to 1 million in the greater metropolitan area). Bilbao was previously a highly industrialized city, however, since the mid 1990s has undergone a profound transformation, and is today a highly attractive city, which has focused on tourism.
Being part of FSC4D project gives us the opportunity to analyze the initial situation of the various policies and measures taken by the city of Bilbao related to the Milan Urban Food PolicyPact . We want to have a Food Governance diagnosis, according to the first three actions of the Pact, “Preparing a favorable context for effective action” in the field of municipal public administration”:
- To promote the collaboration between agencies and municipal departments and seek alignment of policies and programs affecting the food system in the different sectors and administrative levels, adopting and promoting a rights-based approach
- To enhance the participation of stakeholders at the municipal level through dialogue.
- Identify, map and assess local food experiences and initiatives.
The study will represent a picture of the initiatives undertaken on these issues by the different areas of the City Council and by the different stakeholders in Bilbao. This report will serve as a starting point and reflection for future action.
Bilbao is involved, as well, in the Fair trade Town Network, and during the National Fair Trade Week it will expose a mobile, interactive, modular and sustainable exposition about fair trade and local sustainable food. This is one of the main activities in order to promote development awareness raising among the population of the city.
